Think

Think of yourself
When thinking for yourself
Because no one else can
And no one else will

Black Friday

An Haiku
(November 2004)

Gluttony part two
Our table tops are clean now
Shopping can commense

I'll preface this next ditty by apologizing if I offend anyone who completely disagrees with my mentality on this subject. I don't often feel the need to apologize for my beliefs and viewpoints, but since this has a general relation to the "holiday season" and "the season of giving", I wish to minimize any begrudging on either behalf.
See, it's just that I loathe with a passion the whole "it's christmas, go spend money" thing. I hate it, it's so superficial and backwards... but this society is stuck in this "thing" up to our botox inflated eyebrows and foreheads. Why the mad rush to basically trample those poor souls at the cash regsiters I mean, I'm not in disagreement with showering those you love with favors, gifts, and niceties, but why can't we do it all year, every month, rather than buying each person 12-15 boxes of wonder all for one day. This notion only perpetuates unhappiness and ungratefulness with those gifts we receive. If we were to spend the same effort, attention, and money on one special gift or offering maybe once a month or so, the effort would be much more appreciated and recognized. Maybe I'm wrong... but I just believe the whole "gift giving on a certain day" is out of control. Everything we see in this society, from Thanksgiving to Christmas, is in some way fashioned or tethered to this "capitalistic, superficial, materialistic" notion of gift splurge. We could better use our time and finances (as a nation) to come closer together and more tolerant of ourselves as a "national unit"- for we are still a divided, rifted nation.
I love the holiday spirit as much as the next guy/ girl- but I lean more towards the holiday we just tossed in the trash- Thanksgiving. No that's a time of sharing and togetherness! We eat together, we sleep together, we watch football together, we decorate and cook together, but most of all... we don't feel the need to spend exorbitant amounts of money of "stuff". Best of all, this notion is agreed upon- together!!

I love the way leafless branches look against a grey sky...

November Grey
(November 2004)

Oak tree, strong and stately
The agressor
His naked extremities reaching skyward
Cold and grey
A wind pushing forcefully
At his northern face
Exposed and bare

This season, she’s flat and lifeless
But not in a somber way
Not in a negative way
November is full of beautiful days
More like a welcome mat
Or accessible way
As if Saturday

Go on, roll in the grass
Take the time to smell the scent
Of Poplar leaves, a dying waft of brilliance
Nature’s gift to a fall passerby
Of which few will ever notice

I’m constantly surprised and bewildered by the general consensus of fall/ winter= bad. Now don’t get me wrong, most people do like the early to mid fall where vibrant colors fill the landscape to the brim, but a lot of people also turn off their “pleasant vision filter” as soon as the vista becomes more dull and grey. This, to me, is when this world seems most alive and vivid. It’s like mother nature’s soul shining through to us all- that deeper beauty where pureness and uniqueness shine through, catching ones eye. Late fall is raw, the smell of dead leaves fills the air, grass becomes a golden yellow shag carpet streaked with green, and sidewalks feel more cold and firm that they ought to. Our space feels less cluttered, and openness is given new meaning, almost as if truth and honesty are beckoned from on high. We can see through wooded areas where once only the creatures of the forest traveled- now sharing this space with our eyes and our curious stare. Everything is so sparse and bare, that it pulls me in so far that I wouldn’t dream of leaving- because true beauty is always found in the inner workings, the soul, the truth, and the pure grit of humankind. We’ve been modeled after mother nature…

Bad Bush

Because of Bush, I'm now a "red denizen"... well according to this map!

Looks like I didn't have to move to Maple Leaf territory after all- I'm already there!

Bad Bush

Because of Bush, I'm now a "red denizen"... well according to this map!

Looks like I didn't have to move to Maple Leaf territory after all- I'm already there!

As a man I ain't never been much for sunny days...

... but damn sam I love a woman that rains...

It's raining today- and those that know me sure know that I'm a huge fan of rain. It's a calming event for me. And yes, I see it as an event in and of itself. I sit and enjoy it sometimes, just hearing it, feeling it, and taking it all in. I don't care what time of year it is (well, during snow season it can be a cramp in your side) and how it rains, I just love it. In my mind, November was created for grey, gloomy, damp, wood stove and coffee type days. They're made for choppin' wood, cleaning up the last of Autumn's fallen glory, and tossing a football around with Jr. in the yard. Rain just enhances these late fall aspects. I can't articulate my feelings completely, so I'll retire from trying...

Here's something I wrote about rain:

Rain
(April 2004)

Let everyone move
As quickly as they may
To their shelter
To their solace
Let them escape from their day

When the rain comes to call
I take the opposite view
No running, no hiding
I relish it, I love thy rain
I’m a minority

Soothing to me
It comforts like a warm cup of tea
Gray skies warm my heart
Performing their cold, raw part
To never make me wish to flee

The gloomy skies don’t offer a scare
They are welcomed
They are embraced
Like a cozy, comfy chair

They say some people walk in the rain
While others just get wet
I say why walk?
When I can run
And splash more yet

So when the rains do give way
To a sunny, brighter day
I begin to pine
For that gray, content way
That I become when it rains
Soothing me
Healing me
Feeling more like me

U.S.A?

<>I like to write... what it is I can't pretend to label. However, from time to time I'll post some sort of my failed, shady, upside down poetry here. Here's one I wrote recently...

United Superficial Americans? (U.S.A)

He's too...
She's too...
We all can come up with inserted answers
But why?

Why are we as a nation
Driven to a shallow perception
A meaningless search for the superficial
And endless effort spent on "perfect"
Why?

Why does "a few extra" mean fat?
Why can't we be ourselves?
100 per cent of the time, our own
Let our real beauty show
Let our true colors bleed and flow
Why?

Can we have our own mind?
What about how I believe?
If I'm different, then I'm wrong
Or if I'm just not the perfect image
Or image of perfection
Again I'm wrong
But why?
For what?
A few more pennies in someones porcelain bank
With no one but themselves to thank

Posters create a rush
To copy, to imitate, and blush
The market becomes its own worst
Enemy is fear
Our agenda is now clear
And again- why?

Where did the real stuff go?
Where is our conscience?
And our faith in the deeper side
Where is the road not taken?
And a beautiful, wonderful
Blissful pride...
In the real, in the me, in the you
In the true

This world has become so entangled in superficiality. I see it every day, and it bother's me. It bothers me so much and so deeply, that I think and write about it often and freely. I don't have a problem with style, but come on people, where's the substance. A brilliant, famous architect bythe name of Frank Lloyd Wright believed in a concept called, "form following function". How cool and original is that?! We must first think of utility and function for something, then and only then can we design it's aesthetics. This can pertain to anything from clothing and cars, shoes to handbags, and hand-tools to homes. We need to accept that some people think and act differently, and some people don't jump at the "trendy" or the "cool". We need to appreciate people, life, and things for what they are and not what we want them to be...

I'm stepping down off of my soapbox now- sorry to all those who may now think that I think I'm perfect- i'm not, I can assure you.

Good-day...

Let's Get Rollin'

I'm hoping that this thing doesn't turn into an abandoned idea, and that I utilize it for the good of my sanity and those that find solace in it (haha, who the hell would enjoy my inner workings). I'll either start it off with wild abandon or like a fluttering leaf on it's way to the ground- who knows. All I do know is that I have a mind, I use it every minute of every day, and there are times when I want "the world" to read the thoughts that come out of my mind! So... here we go, please feel free to comment to me on anything you see here! {first post= history... but surely not the kind you'd find in a text somewhere, lol}
